Question: How many Catholics have been elected governor of Texas?

Answer: Technically, three. Sam Houston converted to Catholicism as prescribed by Mexican law prior to the Texas Revolution to become eligible for a land grant, but he later became a Baptist at the urging of his wife. Likewise, Francis Lubbock, elected to the governorship during the Civil War, adopted the Catholic faith to marry his first wife. However, after her death, he became a Presbyterian when he remarried. Greg Abbott is the only vocal adherent to Catholicism to be elected governor of Texas.
