Question: What university in Texas was originally called AddRan Male and Female College?
Answer: Texas Christian University. Founders Addison and Randolph Clark, both Fort Worth-based ministers, started the school with just 13 students in 1873 in Thorp Spring, thinking the distance from the rowdy culture of the stockyards would be more conducive to cultivating moral character. Within a few years, the college outgrew its facilities, and the Clarks affiliated with the Disciples of Christ Church, changing the school’s name to AddRan Christian University.
The college moved to Waco in 1895 and changed its name to Texas Christian University in 1902. When a fire burned the campus in 1910, TCU relocated to Fort Worth, where it was provided 50 acres and $200,000.
