Question: What Texas town is home to a pack of “ghost wolves”?
Answer: Galveston. A few years ago, researchers discovered the island’s coyotes are descended from red wolves, which disappeared from the Gulf Coast decades ago. Up to 100 ghost wolves in a dozen or so packs are thought to roam Galveston Island, and sightings are tracked by an organization dedicated to their well-being.
The ghost wolves were the subject of a New York Times Magazine profile in 2022, and they were featured in an episode of the PBS show Chasing the Tide last year. CNBC and National Geographic are currently working on projects about the hybrids.
