Answer: Waterloo. The origin of the name is unknown, but in 1839, the Texas Congress selected it as the republic’s capital and renamed it after Stephen F. Austin. Previously, seven sites had served as temporary capitals: San Felipe de Austin, Washington-on-the-Brazos, Harrisburg, Galveston, Velasco, West Columbia, and Houston.
