Answer: Sheryl Leach. Born in Athens in 1952, she attended Southern Methodist University and Texas A&M University-Commerce, where she studied elementary and bilingual education. Frustrated by the lack of educational entertainment options for her toddler, she developed the idea for what would become Barney & Friends in 1987 with Kathy Parker and Dennis DeShazer. The trio produced a series of home videos called Barney and the Backyard Gang before the show premiered on PBS in 1992.
