Question: What is the official state dog breed of Texas?
Answer: The Blue Lacy. The working dog is named after the Lacy brothers, four ranchers who moved from Kentucky to Burnet County in 1858. The breed is thought to have been developed from greyhounds, scenthounds, and coyotes. The Blue Lacy has a smooth coat, floppy ears, distinctive orange or yellow eyes, and weighs between 30 to 50 pounds when full grown. Extremely intelligent and easy to train, they are adept at herding cattle and tracking wild game.
The legislature designated the Blue Lacy as the official state dog breed of Texas in 2005, recognizing it for having “more than pulled its weight on many a Texas spread.”
