Article Icon 1House Democrats Issue Demands

An Illinois judge ruled Wednesday that local law enforcement does not have the authority to arrest Texas House Democrats staying in the state, thwarting Attorney General Ken Paxton’s effort to enforce civil arrest warrants for the absent lawmakers.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus announced Thursday that its members would return to Texas after the special session adjourns and new congressional maps for California are introduced, saying they had “fought back ferociously and took the fight to Trump across America.”

Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick previously announced they would adjourn the special session today if the Texas House still lacks a quorum. Yesterday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a special election for this November on new congressional maps.

Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn has asked the Department of Justice to investigate groups affiliated with Beto O’Rourke and George Soros to determine if they are “acting in violation of federal public corruption and election laws” by supporting the quorum-breaking Democrats.

Article Icon 1Arlington Pays off AT&T Stadium

The city of Arlington will pay off its $325 million bond for AT&T Stadium today, a decade ahead of schedule, saving taxpayers $150 million in interest. The Dallas Cowboys have played their home games in the $1.2 billion stadium since 2009.

Voters approved the 30-year bond in 2004, and the city has paid over $490 million in principal, interest, and fees since it was issued the following year. It was intended to pay for half of the cost to build the stadium, with the Cowboys picking up the balance.

Voters approved a half-cent sales tax increase, a 2% hotel occupancy tax, and a 5% rental car tax to pay the debt. Those taxes will remain in effect and be redirected to payments for Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers, as voters authorized in 2017.

AT&T Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV in 2011, when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next year, it will host nine World Cup matches.

Article Icon 1Texas Dominates Nation’s Hottest ZIP Codes

Texas is home to six of the 10 ZIP codes with the most new residents this year, according to a recent analysis from MovingPlace. The Lone Star State dominated the company’s compilation of the nation’s 100 hottest ZIP codes, with 29 on the list.

At No. 1, Cypress (77433) saw 3,638 people move to the area during the first five months of this year. New Braunfels (78130) was No. 2, with 3,486 new residents, followed by No. 4 Leander (78641) and No. 5 Katy (77493).

The study shows that most movers are relocating to suburbs rather than city centers, opting for more affordable homes and high-quality schools. It credits the availability of jobs and the absence of a state income tax as factors that make Texas an appealing destination.

MovingPlace used proprietary data from its parent company, Porch Group, to analyze 6.3 million moves between Jan. 1 and May 31. See the full report here.
