Article Icon 1GlobalWafers Opens $3.5B Sherman Plant

Taiwanese silicon wafer manufacturer GlobalWafers opened its $3.5 billion plant in Sherman on Thursday and announced plans for a $4 billion expansion at the 142-acre site.

Our U.S. customers appear to have a very strong demand for U.S.-based production capacity,” said GlobalWafers chairperson and CEO Doris Hsu, citing heightened interest in avoiding tariffs on semiconductors manufactured overseas.

The Sherman plant was built with $406 million in anticipated funding from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. Hsu indicated GlobalWafers plans to build two more phases at its Sherman campus, noting the development timeline depends on “reasonable pricing, prepayments, and government support.”

The facility is expected to produce 1.2 million wafers a month and will eventually employ 1,500 people.

Article Icon 1PBR Crowns Champion at World Finals

Fort Worth and Arlington hosted the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals last week. The finals culminated in a weekend showdown among the sport’s top 25 riders, which was dominated by three-time world champion Jose Vitor Leme of Brazil.

The event began with the four-day Eliminations round, which Leme won with 353 points. Dalton Kasel of Decatur, the world’s top-ranked rider going into the competition, finished sixth with 125 points.

The top five riders in the Eliminations round advanced to the championship round, along with the 15 riders who had accumulated the most points during the season. The top five finishers in the second-chance Ride for Redemption round completed the field for the championship.

Leme won $1,632,667 with his first-place finish at AT&T Stadium. On Saturday, a team called the Jokers netted $500,000 for winning the multi-discipline Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo team competition.

Article Icon 1Most Overpriced Retirement Towns

Personal finance website GOBankingRates surveyed real estate agents to compile a list of the five most overpriced retirement towns in Texas. All five are located in or adjacent to the Hill Country: Boerne, Fredericksburg, Georgetown, Kerrville, and Marble Falls.

The report cited institutional investors and high property taxes—approaching 3% of a home’s assessed value—as factors that drive up prices. It also cautioned potential buyers to consider the risks of water scarcity and development restrictions when deciding where to retire.

In Fredericksburg and Marble Falls, institutional investors have snatched up properties, creating “artificial competition” that has caused home values to increase “beyond what local economics justify.” Both of these towns, along with Kerrville, are affected by development restrictions and aging infrastructure.

Boerne’s average home value is $550,180, and Georgetown is one of the most expensive destinations in Texas for assisted senior living facilities. Georgetown has been one of the fastest-growing mid-size cities in the country in recent years, driving prices up across the board.
