TEA Investigating ‘Reprehensible’ Kirk Remarks
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is investigating public school teachers who have posted or shared “reprehensible and inappropriate content” following last week’s assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
In a Friday letter to superintendents, Education Commissioner Mike Morath said these actions could violate the Educators’ Code of Ethics and warrant sanctions. He praised administrators who have disciplined or terminated employees who “have proliferated such vile content.”
“While the exercise of free speech is a fundamental right we are all blessed to share, it does not give carte blanche authority to celebrate or sow violence against those that share differing beliefs and perspectives,” Morath wrote.
Employees in Klein ISD and Abilene Wylie ISD have been fired for their remarks regarding Kirk’s death, while administrators in Midland ISD, Pasadena ISD, and Goose Creek ISD are reviewing posts by teachers in those districts. The American Federation of Teachers slammed TEA’s investigation as a “political witch hunt.”
500 National Guard Troops Sent to El Paso
The Texas Military Department has deployed 500 National Guard soldiers to El Paso to work with U.S. Border Patrol in securing the border with Mexico.
Some of the soldiers will work on infrastructure projects, while the rest will be deputized under Title 8 to detain illegal border crossers. Earlier this year, the U.S. military deployed approximately 2,000 troops to the region along with several 19-ton Stryker armored vehicles.
Although apprehensions in the region are at a historic low, Sector Chief Walter Slosar warned that the Border Patrol isn’t backing off.
“If you come here illegally, you will be arrested. You are going to be removed. You are going to be prosecuted, despite what smugglers are telling people,” he said.
Cowboys Play 1,000th Regular Season Game
The Dallas Cowboys played their 1,000th regular-season game yesterday, beating the New York Giants 40-37 with a 46-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal as time expired in overtime. Aubrey nailed a 64-yard field goal at the end of regulation to tie the game following five touchdowns in the final 12 minutes.
The franchise was founded in 1960 by businessman Clint Murchison Jr., who hired Tex Schramm as general manager and Tom Landry as head coach. During a 20-year stretch of winning seasons beginning in 1966, the Cowboys appeared in five Super Bowls and won two.
Bum Bright purchased the team in 1984 and sold it to the current owner, Jerry Jones, in 1989. The Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s under head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. Since 1996, the team has not advanced beyond the divisional round in the playoffs.
According to a story in the Dallas Morning News last week, the best players in Cowboys history include quarterbacks Roger Staubach, Don Meredith, and Troy Aikman; running backs Don Perkins, Tony Dorsett, and Emmitt Smith; and wide receivers Bob Hayes, Drew Pearson, and Michael Irvin.
