New Confession May Impact Looming Execution
A Texas inmate has confessed to the murders for which his cousin, James Broadnax, is scheduled to be executed on April 30.
Demarius Cummings, serving a life sentence for the same 2008 double murder, said in a statement that “I was the one who shot the two victims, not James,” as he seeks to stop Broadnax’s execution.
Broadnax’s attorneys are demanding a new trial after Cummings’ confession, saying his statements align with evidence presented at trial.
In his statement released Thursday, Cummings took full responsibility for the planned robbery and the shooting of Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler, who were Christian music producers.

Texas Homeowners Are Leaving $1.2 Billion on the Table
With property taxes still elevated statewide, most Texas homeowners aren’t protesting. That’s a costly mistake, and 2025 certified data reveals exactly how much it costs.
● 68% of residential properties didn’t protest in 2025 (3.93 million homes)
● $1.2 billion in potential missed savings statewide
○ Roughly $305 per non-protesting home
Those who did protest saw real results. And those who protested with Ownwell saw some of the best ones.
● Denton County ($250k-$500k): Ownwell achieved a 98% win rate and delivered an average net savings of $418 per successful protest, 71% higher than the market average.
● Tarrant County: Ownwell outperformed other traditional firms across all home value tiers, with savings after fees ranging from 41% to 98%.
The biggest risk isn’t losing a protest. It’s never filing one before the May 15 deadline.
