Good Morning! On this day in 1931, cult leader Marshall Applewhite was born in Spur. He and several dozen adherents of the Heaven’s Gate religious movement died in a mass suicide in 1997.
Yesterday was Bike to Work Day, and the CBS News Texas team celebrated with a bike ride through downtown Fort Worth. (See Report)

TX House Hits Deadline
Hundreds of bills died Thursday when the Texas House reached a midnight deadline to pass legislation proposed by its members.
Democrats worked to slow proceedings throughout the day in an effort to prevent Republican-crafted bills from being voted on.
Among the bills that passed was a measure that would allow people to sue vaccine manufacturers under certain circumstances. Another proposal that received approval was a repeal of the state’s defunct anti-sodomy law.
Over in the Senate, a bill was approved that would shut down the Texas Lottery Commission and transfer administration of the lottery to another agency. The 140-day legislative session ends on June 2.
Longhorns Win Baseball Season Title
In their first year in the conference, No. 3 Texas Longhorns baseball clinched the SEC regular season title Thursday with a ninth-inning home run from right fielder Max Belyeu, defeating Oklahoma 7-4.
It was the first game of the season-finale series against the Sooners, and it saw Texas claw back from a 3-1 deficit, scoring three runs in the seventh.
After Belyeu’s homer, left-hand closer Dylan Volantis pitched a shutout in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
The Longhorns take their No. 1 seeding into next week’s SEC postseason tournament play, with their opponent still to be determined.
New Adventure Trail, ‘xTx’, to Span Texas
A new adventure trail, announced last year, is now being tested, with some already coining it the Pacific Crest Trail of Texas.
The Cross Texas Horse, Hike and Bike Adventure Route, or xTx for short, will span 1,500 miles and run across the entire state from Orange (on the Louisiana border) to El Paso, factoring in all the varied types of terrain Texas has to offer along the way.
The new trail is the brainchild of Charles Gandy, a renowned traveler who says he has personally covered every inch of the proposed route.
The project, currently adding ground-proofers to prove the route, beat its funding goal of $40,000 in 2024 and looks to add $310,000 this year as the adventure trail takes shape.
