Article Icon 1Chevron Laying Off 200 Texas Employees

Houston-based oil giant Chevron has announced it will lay off about 200 of its Texas employees as part of a 15-20% workforce reduction.

The Texas layoffs go into effect July 15, impacting employees at Permian Basin, the top-producing oilfield in the U.S.

Chevron announced in February that it would lay off up to 9,000 of its employees worldwide in order cut costs and “simplify our organizational structure.”

Since then, Chevron’s license to operate in Venezuela has been revoked and has announced the termination of 600 positions in California.

Faizan Zaki, a seventh grader from Allen, Texas, took home the Scripps National Spelling Bee title on Thursday night, successfully spelling “éclaircissement” for the win and a $50,000 prize.

Zaki, who was last year’s runner-up, entered the competition as the odds-on favorite, but threw away a chance to win it all earlier in the evening when he misspelled “commelina” in a rush of enthusiasm.

Known for his gleeful demeanor in competition, Zaki also rushed through his winning word without asking the typical questions about definition and language of origin.

The event marked the bee’s 100th anniversary.

Three Texas cities landed in the top 10 of U.S. News & World Report’s top 250 places to live in the country.

In the year of the suburbs, Pearland led the state with the No. 3 ranking overall. The Houston suburb was followed by League City and Leander at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively.

Texas boasts eight cities in the top 30 and solid representation throughout the list, with major cities like El Paso, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin also showing up.

Based on public data and user opinions, the list weighs a city’s desirability, quality of life, income, housing costs, and more.

The list is topped by Johns Creek, Georgia. You can see the full list here.

The Flyover

The Knicks-Pacers series has been wildly entertaining so far – and for the first time in history, trading on the outcome of the games is legal in Texas, thanks to Kalshi. This is possible because Kalshi is different from sportsbooks, operating like the stock market instead of using a traditional “house” model.

Rather than using complicated odds, Kalshi markets show a simple percentage. For example, the Knicks have about a 50% chance of winning the series, which means a $100 trade would pay out $200 if it happens.

Alongside simpler odds, Kalshi offers other unique benefits, including better pricing and the ability to cash out at any time at fair market value.

“Trade the NBA today and profit from your opinion!” But not only does Kalshi offer the only legal way to trade on sports in Texas, it also offers tons of other interesting markets to trade on.

Kalshi is a prediction market, which is a market on the outcome of a future event, and these events can be almost anything.

For example, you can trade on whether or not America will enter a recession in 2025 (currently a 42% chance), whether or not President Trump will declassify the Epstein documents (currently 31%), who will win TIME’s Person of the Year, or which movies will get Oscar nominations.

Our most popular product by far though: elections. Right now, we have markets on which party will win in 2028, as well as who will be the nominee for both Republicans (current leader JD Vance) and Democrats (current leader Gavin Newsom).

Think you know something other people don’t on any of these topics? Trade on Kalshi today to profit from your opinion!
