The Roundup

Article Icon 1Texas Buys Border Land

The State of Texas has purchased two large ranches near the Mexican border for the purpose of constructing border walls.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced Tuesday that her office had purchased a 1,402-acre ranch in Starr County along the Rio Grande River.

In West Texas, the state purchased the 353,785-acre Brewster Ranch, the largest privately owned ranch in the state.

A proposed 1.5-mile wall would edge the Starr County ranch, blocking a particularly high-traffic border crossing where extensive crime has been reported.

Article Icon 1Housing Shortage Worsens

Texas is among the U.S. states with the biggest housing shortage, leading to higher home prices and rents in the state, according to a new report.

Based on 2022 data, Texas was 320,000 housing units short of demand, with Houston in particular covering just 83% of demand, despite building 66,000 new homes that year.

Texas builds more homes than any other state, but the housing gap continues to climb with the state’s nation-leading population growth.

The 2022 gap jumped up from the 306,000 mark for the previous year, indicating a worsening trend.

Article Icon 1Lone Star Rally Starts Up

The 2024 Lone Star Rally, Texas’ largest motorcycle rally, is underway this weekend as nearly 500,000 visitors have descended on Galveston for the annual four-day event.

Increased security measures are in place after a local gang member shot and wounded six people at last year’s rally.

The rainy weekend could make Galveston’s streets more treacherous as rally officials ramp up warnings against riding while impaired.

The Lone Star Rally is North America’s largest four-day annual biker rally and is estimated to draw a minimum of $115 million.
