Article Icon 1Paxton Files Motion to Close GOP Primaries

Attorney Gen. Ken Paxton and the Texas GOP leadership filed a joint motion in federal court calling for closed Republican primaries in Texas.

The Republican Party of Texas (RPT) sued Secretary of State Jane Nelson in September with the same goal.

The filing urges Nelson to reverse a Texas Election Code provision as unconstitutional, calling it a “slap in the face to the Republican party and voters” to allow non-Republicans to vote in GOP primaries.

Paxton is running in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, seeking to unseat Sen. John Cornyn in a tightening election.

The school district in Uvalde opened a new elementary school on Friday honoring the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting in May 2022.

The new school, Legacy Elementary, replaces Robb and is slated to begin classes on Oct. 20.

Legacy is a two-story campus featuring a crafted oak tree with two large branches and 19 smaller branches, memorializing the two teachers and 19 students killed in the mass shooting. Friday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony also included 21 seconds of silence in honor of the victims.

At the ceremony school board president Laura Perez said, “This school is not about forgetting but remembering with dignity, rebuilding with courage, and choosing to believe in the future even when the past still hurts.

Article Icon 1 Texas-OU Set for Red River Rivalry Game

The 121st annual Red River Rivalry (formerly the Red River Shootout) football match between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners kicks off at 2:30 p.m. today from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which has served as the game’s historic home since 1932.

Texas comes into the game with a 3-2 record. After starting the season ranked No. 1, the Longhorns fell out of the AP Top 25 entirely following their loss to unranked Florida last weekend. Star quarterback Arch Manning is still working to prove himself.

No. 6 Oklahoma is undefeated so far, having struck gold with transfer quarterback John Mateer, who was was one of the favorites in the Heisman race before fracturing his hand a month ago. The expectation is that he’ll play today, but it’ll be a game-time decision.

Oddsmakers favor Texas in the contest, but that could depend on whether Mateer is good to go today in what remains one of the greatest rivalries in college sports.
