The City of Austin faced backlash after unveiling a $1.1 million logo redesign to replace its 1916 seal, which officials said no longer reflects the city’s values and mission.

The redesign, announced two months before a proposed property tax hike amid a record deficit, followed the City Council’s approval of a $564,000 contract with design firm Pentagram.

The remainder of the $1.1 million allocated for the rebrand will pay for advertising, branded materials, and new staff to manage the branding.

Among the redesign critics was U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, who criticized the city’s move in light of the recent Cracker Barrel rebranding effort. You can see the new logo unveiled by Austin here.

Article Icon 1Texas Bracing For Flash Flooding

Gov. Greg Abbott mobilized Texas emergency management resources Saturday as moisture from Hurricane Lorena was expected to bring dangerous flash flooding across parts of the state.

Lorena and a stalled front will converge over Texas this weekend into early next week, leading to possible rainfall rates of 2–3 inches per hour.

Downpours capable of producing flash flooding will be most common in West and South Texas. The Texas Hill Country, lying within the higher-risk zone for this event, is especially vulnerable to flash flooding.

Texans are encouraged to follow instructions from local officials, make an emergency plan, and build a kit containing emergency supplies. You can see a map of the projected trajectory of the storm here.

A Houston-based company faces felony charges for pollution after being accused of dumping 100 gallons of coconut moisturizer into the White Oak Bayou.

Immacule Lab Corporation, a cosmetics manufacturer, was investigated by the office of Harris County Constable Pct. 1 after area residents reported their findings of a strange substance in the Harris County bayou.

Investigators found the same substance from the bayou inside a nearby facility, and confirmed with the facility manager that a bad batch of the substance was discharged into the bayou without a permit.

The Constable’s office claimed the maximum punishment for the offense is a $10,000 fine and 10 years in prison. You can see a photo of the coconut lotion in the White Oak Bayou here.
