Lawmakers Discuss Flood Relief, Advance THC Bill
Texas lawmakers discussed flood relief and preparedness at the Capitol yesterday, as dozens of bills have been filed to address issues pertaining to the devastating disaster earlier this month. The number missing in Kerr County is now two after a woman’s body was found in Kerrville.
A Senate committee on Tuesday advanced legislation to ban THC-infused hemp products, resisting Gov. Abbott’s call to impose strict regulations on the industry. “We’ll regulate it by banning it. Because we already tried regulating it,” said Sen. Bob Hall (R-Edgewood).
Abbott agreed that the products should be banned for Texans under 21 while insisting they should be accessible to adults. House lawmakers are reportedly more open to Abbott’s position.
On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick released a list of 16 priority bills addressing Abbott’s 18 special session agenda items.
Contract Awarded for Fort Bliss Detention Center
The Department of Defense has awarded a Virginia company an initial contract of $232 million to build and operate a 5,000-bed detention center at the U.S. Army’s Fort Bliss in El Paso. When finished in September 2027, it will be the largest detention center for illegal immigrants in the U.S.
In March, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth authorized ICE to use the base to house illegal immigrants. Acquisition Logistics of Virginia was one of 13 companies to submit bids for the project, which is estimated to cost $1.26 billion.
The Trump administration is currently on track to deport more than 300,000 illegal immigrants this year, which is the most since 2012 but less than its goal of 1 million a year.
Hegseth recently informed Congress that ICE is also considering using military bases in Indiana and New Jersey as detention centers for illegal immigrants.

Austin, Houston, Dallas, and McAllen are among the top 25 cities in the U.S. offering a high quality of life, according to a newly released ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The study examined factors such as climate, affordability, entertainment, and green spaces.

Likewise, Dallas, No. 20, is in the top 5% of cities for health care access, and its median home value of $337,445 is lower than similarly sized cities. At No. 23, McAllen boasts year-round sunshine and the ninth-lowest cost of living. See the full list here.
