Article Icon 1Redistricting Plan Unveiled

State Rep. Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) filed a redistricting plan yesterday that would likely add five seats to the state’s Republican delegation in Congress, as President Donald Trump has requested.

Republicans currently hold 25 seats in the U.S. House, while Democrats hold 12. Another Democrat-leaning district is vacant.

The proposed map eliminates Democrat-held seats in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and South Texas by adding Republican-leaning voters in adjoining districts. Trump won each of the proposed Republican-leaning districts by at least 10% last November.

Democrats have considered leaving the state in an effort to stop Republicans from approving a new map. Attorney General Ken Paxton has threatened to arrest absent lawmakers, and House members who don’t show up would incur daily fines of $500. Democrat donors have reportedly offered to pay the fines.

A hearing on the plan is scheduled for tomorrow. Dave’s Redistricting App, a website that allows users to create their own proposed maps, shows the partisan breakdown of the current and proposed district maps.

The parasitic New World screwworm has been reported less than 400 miles from McAllen, raising alarms that it could spread to Texas in as little as four months.

On Monday, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn told his colleagues that a screwworm outbreak could cost Texas livestock producers up to $1 billion and the general economy $3.7 billion. Consumers would likely see even higher beef prices.

Treatment remedies for infected cattle have jumped in price, prompting some Mexican ranchers to resort to pouring gasoline on their livestock to kill the larvae. An infection can kill a cow within a week. The screwworm also poses a threat to wildlife and has infected humans on occasion.

The federal government is building a facility for the production of sterile male flies at the former Moore Air Base in Hidalgo County and funding the expansion of a similar facility in Mexico. In May, the Screwworm Coalition of Texas was organized to provide information about efforts to combat the parasite’s spread.

Thirteen Texas sandwich shops are among the top 100 in the nation, according to a recently released Yelp list. Three are in the top 10.

Tony’s Italian Delicatessen in Montgomery got the No. 4 ranking. Its sandwiches are named after famous real or fictional Italian-Americans. A favorite among customers is the Stallone, which has ham, capicola, soppressata, and salami.

At the No. 7 spot is Hugs Cafe in McKinney, a nonprofit that employs people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The popular Peach Gobbler has turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese, and peach chutney.

Gino’s Deli Stop N Buy in San Antonio was ranked No. 9. Owner Aleem Chaudhry claims his Philly cheesesteak is the “best this side of the Mississippi.” See the full list here.
