Article Icon 1Democrats Enter Races for Governor, U.S. Senate

An East Texas rancher and a retired astronaut are running for governor and U.S. Senate as Democrats.

Bobby Cole, a retired firefighter who runs a ranch in Quitman, is a first-time candidate who describes himself as a “traditional Democrat” in the mold of LBJ and FDR. Among his priorities are funding public schools, improving the power grid, growing the economy, and cutting property taxes.

In a social media post, Cole accused Abbott of “tearing up everything we’ve built” and “kissing up to bullies and billionaires.”

Retired astronaut Terry Virts, also a first-time candidate, announced he is running for Sen. John Cornyn’s seat on Monday, calling the incumbent “just another D.C. insider who has lost touch with Texas.” Virts was the commander of the International Space Station.

Article Icon 1‘Liver King’ Arrested in Austin

A social media influencer known as the “Liver King” was arrested in Austin Tuesday night after making a series of threats against podcaster Joe Rogan, who has lived in the Texas capital since 2020.

The YouTuber, whose real name is Brian Johnson, posted a video on Monday in which he challenged Rogan to an “honorable” fight while wearing a wolf pelt and holding an exotic firearm in each hand.

Man to man, I’m picking a fight with you. I have no training in jiu-jitsu, you’re a black belt, you should dismantle me,” he said. “Your rules, I’ll come to you, whenever you’re ready.”

Johnson, 47, has claimed his muscular physique is from eating raw meat and doing intense workouts, but he was forced to admit in 2022 that he spends $11,000 a month on steroids. He is detained in the Travis County Jail on a charge of making a terroristic threat.

Article Icon 1Two Austinites Star in NBC Reality Show

Destination X, NBC’s new reality show that drops contestants in an unknown location and challenges them to figure out where they are, features two women from Austin—Mackenzie “Mack” Fitzgerald and Allyson “Ally” Bross.

Fitzgerald attended Dallas Baptist University and SMU’s Dedman School of Law. She currently works as an attorney drafting bills for the Texas Legislature. Her show bio states she knows how to navigate fake friendships, power, and strategy from working with politicians.

Bross, originally from Orlando, earned degrees in political science and religion from the University of Central Florida. According to her bio, she spent a year visiting 32 countries across every continent and is now an Austin-based travel influencer.

In the first episode, Fitzgerald and Bross formed an alliance. However, Fitzgerald confessed that her strategy is to team up with the least intelligent person and then backstab him or her to advance.
