Article Icon 1Paxton Investigating U.S. Masters Swimming

Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) after a biological male who identifies as female won five women’s events at the organization’s Spring Nationals meet in San Antonio last month.

Ana Caldas, 47, whose original name is Hugo, won gold in the women’s age 45-49 category in each of the events the swimmer competed in. USMS allows swimmers to participate in the gender competition category in which they identify.

Paxton has requested records to determine if USMS has violated state consumer protection laws by engaging in “false, deceptive and misleading acts and practices.” In a statement, he called the organization’s transgender policy “reprehensible” and “insulting to female athletes.”

Texas has banned biological males from competing in women’s sports at the high school and college levels. In February, President Trump issued an executive order withholding public funding from educational institutions that allow males to compete in women’s sports.

Article Icon 1LNG Fueling Facility Approved

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard have approved construction of a $300 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Texas City. It’s projected to be the first marine bunker on the Gulf Coast to provide the alternative fuel option.

Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP) is a project of Houston-based Pilot LNG and Seapath, a subsidiary of New York-based Libra Group. Upon completion in the second half of 2027, the facility is expected to produce 720,000 gallons of LNG per day.

LNG is promoted as a cleaner alternative to traditional ship fuel, offering significant reductions in sulfur and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the Biden administration suspended LNG exports last year over concerns about environmental pollution from methane gas.

President Trump rescinded that order upon assuming office, and his administration issued a response to a federal study that sought to justify the suspension, saying it “defied reason and reality and hurt American progress.”

Article Icon 1Top Baby Names of 2024

The Social Security Administration has released its annual list of the country’s most popular baby names. For the second year in a row, Olivia and Liam were the top names for newborns in Texas.

For boys, the top 10 names in 2024 were the same as they were the previous year, though the order changed: Liam, Noah, Mateo, Santiago, Sebastian, Elijah, Oliver, Elias, Ezra, and Daniel.

For girls, Sofia is the only addition to last year’s top 10 names, replacing Luna: Olivia, Emma, Mia, Camila, Isabella, Sophia, Amelia, Sofia, Charlotte, and Eliana.

Interestingly, Luka was the 77th most popular boy name, with 527 babies sharing the name of former Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, who wore No. 77. Among the most distinctive Texas names were Regina, Renata, and Julieta for girls and Rodrigo, Roberto, and Leonel for boys.
