Question: What Texan made the world’s first fully automated landing in an airplane?

Answer: Carl Joseph Crane. Born in 1900 in San Antonio, he was a pioneer in instrumental flight, writing the first manual on the subject and having over 100 patents to his name. Using instruments he designed and with the assistance of two crewmates, Crane performed an automated landing in a Fokker C-14 at Wright-Patterson Field in Ohio on August 23, 1937.
