Answer: David Adickes. He was born in Huntsville in 1927 and studied for 2 years in France before being hired to teach in UT Austin’s art department. In 1983, he constructed a 36-foot representation of a cellist for installation in Houston’s Theater District. He created the famous statue of Houston in 1994, and he erected a 76-foot statue of Stephen F. Austin in Brazoria County in 2006. Adickes died last June at the age of 98.
