Question: What was the name of the first horse registered by the American Quarter Horse Association?

Answer: Wimpy. Born at the King Ranch in 1937, Wimpy was anything but, standing 15 hands tall and weighing 1,200 pounds. The chestnut was named grand champion at the 1941 Southwestern Livestock Exposition in Fort Worth and given the prestigious No. 1 designation in the association’s stud book.

The competition’s ring steward later described how the horse “seemed to float out” and “almost looked like he was walking on eggs and didn’t want to crack any.” Wimpy would sire 174 offspring before dying at the age of 22.
