Question: Where in Texas can you visit a replica of the historic Globe Theater in London, where William Shakespeare produced many of his plays?
Answer: Odessa College. Built between 1958 and 1964, the Globe of the Great Southwest was the brainchild of Marjorie Morris, an English teacher at Odessa High School in 1948. She solicited donations for the project over several years, during which time she obtained her master’s degree and began teaching at Odessa College.
The octagonal theater seats 410 people and has excellent acoustics due to its wood and plaster construction. In 1989, a replica of Shakespeare’s wife’s home was built adjacent to the theater. The theater is reputed to be the most authentic permanent replica of the original Globe Theater, built in 1598. It was featured in Life magazine in 1966.
