Question: When did Texas ratify the U.S. Equal Rights Amendment?

Answer: March 30, 1972. When the state legislature ratified the proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Texas became the eighth state to give its approval. Only 35 of the requisite 38 states ratified the amendment before the extended 1982 deadline, however, so it was not added to the Constitution.

Three states have approved the amendment since the deadline, but six others have rescinded their previous ratifications. Prior to leaving office, President Biden declared the ERA should be recognized as the “law of the land,” but the National Archives refused to certify it as the 28th Amendment, citing the original deadline.
