Question: What kind of stone was used to build the Texas State Capitol in Austin?
Answer: “Sunset Red” granite, more commonly known as pink granite. Built from 1882 to 1888, the 302-foot-tall capitol required some 4,000 train cars of granite, which was extracted from a quarry in Marble Falls, cut by Scottish masons in Burnet, and then shipped to Austin. Several dozen granite stones that fell off the train can still be seen along tracks around the capital city.
