Question: What Texas coastal town was once home to a hotel built entirely over water?

Answer: Galveston. The Flagship Hotel opened in 1965 on the site of the original Pleasure Pier, a World War II-era recreational facility for U.S. military personnel that was destroyed by Hurricane Carla in 1961.

The seven-story hotel boosted tourism for many years but had become a blight by the turn of the century. The hotel was sold to Landry’s in 2003, and it was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Landry’s opted to tear down the hotel and build an amusement park on the pier, which opened in 2012.
