Question: What Texas native was the first American to walk in space?

Answer: Edward H. White II. Born in San Antonio in 1930, he attended West Point and joined the Air Force, becoming a test pilot before he was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

On June 3, 1965, during the Gemini 4 mission, White performed a 21-minute spacewalk, using a handheld maneuvering oxygen-jet gun to propel himself and maneuvering by twisting his body and pulling on an 8-meter tether when the gun’s fuel ran out. White died in 1967 during a fire in a pre-launch test for Apollo 1.
