Question: What hit TV show featured the 561-foot-tall Reunion Tower in Dallas at the beginning of every episode?

Answer: Dallas. The iconic landmark opened to the public on April 15, 1978, almost two weeks after the show debuted on CBS. The intro to the first seven seasons only shows the base of the tower, as it wasn’t completed during initial filming.

The $35 million tower and adjacent Hyatt Regency hotel were financed by real estate developer Ray Hunt, son of oil tycoon H. L. Hunt. Consultants suggested the name Esplanade, but business partner John Scovell opted for Reunion Tower, a reference to the short-lived commune highlighted in today’s newsletter.
