Born in Denver, Colorado, he was a member of the 1969 Texas Longhorns football team, which beat Notre Dame at the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1970 to win the national championship. Only a few weeks earlier, X-rays revealed a tumor in Steinmark’s left leg, and doctors amputated it at the hip. His autobiography, I Play To Win, was published three months after his death on June 6, 1971. The 47-foot-tall Freddie Steinmark scoreboard at UT’s Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium is named in his honor.
