Question: What does the name “Pampa” mean?

Answer: “Plain,” from Quechua, an indigenous language from Peru. The Panhandle town of about 16,000 was founded in 1887 when the Southern Kansas Railway established a station at the site. It was called Glasgow and then Sutton before local landowner George Tyng suggested the name Pampa. The local geography apparently reminded him of the Pampas grasslands in Argentina and Uruguay.
