Question: When did the Red River Rivalry adopt its current moniker?

Answer: Long known as the Red River Shootout, the annual matchup between the Longhorns and the Sooners was renamed the Red River Rivalry in 2005. SBC Communications (the immediate predecessor to the current iteration of AT&T) opted for the new name to avoid connotations of gun violence. When Allstate purchased the naming rights in 2014, they dubbed it the Red River Showdown. In 2023, the name was again changed to the Red River Rivalry.
