Question: What Texas college is home to a 13-ton bust of John Wayne?

Answer: Lubbock Christian University. In 1979—the year Wayne died—Australian sculptor Brett-Livingstone Strong paid $100 to purchase the massive sandstone boulder, which was removed from a cliff next to the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu. Strong sold the carving, titled “Life-Time-Light,” for $1 million to Arizona real estate investor Tom Murphy, who displayed it briefly at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre before putting it in storage. In 1991, Murphy donated the bust to Lubbock Christian University, whose administrators renamed it “Spirit of Independence” and installed it in the library.
