Question: What Texas town claims to be the true burial site of legendary outlaw Billy the Kid?

Answer: Hico. According to numerous historical records, Henry McCarty—who adopted the alias William H. Bonney and was known as Billy the Kid—was fatally shot in 1881 by the local sheriff in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, at the age of 21.

In 1948, a Hico man known as Brushy Bill Roberts claimed to be Billy the Kid and asked New Mexico Governor Thomas J. Mabry for a pardon. Mabry rejected the man’s claim to be Billy the Kid in 1950, and Roberts died shortly thereafter. In 1987, Hico erected a monument to Brushy Bill and a Billy the Kid museum.
