Question: What legendary Texas sportswriter started a magazine known as the “Bible of Texas Football”?
Answer: Dave Campbell. Born in Waco in 1925, he earned a Bronze Star for his service in France and Germany in World War II before graduating from Baylor University in 1950. He went to work for the Waco Tribune-Herald, and he was its sports editor from 1953 to 1993. In 1960, he started Texas Football, a yearly review of high school and college programs across the state. The first edition sold for 50 cents and featured Texas Longhorns running back Jack Collins on the cover.
Today, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has a circulation of 180,000 and a website that was visited 2.2 million times last year. Campbell was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He died in 2021 and is buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
