Question: Where in Texas can you drive on a road made out of gold?
Answer: In Montague County, where 39 miles of U.S. Highway 81 and U.S. Highway 287 are estimated to contain as much as $230,000 worth of gold—$31,000 in 1963 when the historical marker near the site was erected.
The discovery was made in 1936 when crews with the Texas Highway Department noticed that the sand used to mix the concrete for the roads glistened with such intensity that samples were sent to a lab for analysis. The sand did indeed contain gold, but each ton only yielded an amount worth 54 cents, and the effort and cost required to extract it was deemed unfeasible.
