Question: What was the name of the Confederate unit composed of men who tried to avoid conscription by hiding in thickets throughout North Texas?

Answer: The Brush Battalion. Organized in November 1863, the group of up to 1,100 or so men received amnesty in exchange for turning themselves in to serve the Confederacy. Tasked with defending the state’s northwestern frontier against Indian attacks, the battalion saw limited action before being disbanded in March 1864.
