Question: How did Bexar County get its name?

Answer: San Antonio de Béxar was one of Mexico’s 23 administrative divisions of Texas when the Republic won its independence. It was established in 1731 as Villa de San Fernando de Béxar, the first civil government in the province of Texas.

It was named after the heir to the Spanish throne and the nearby Presidio San Antonio de Béjar, a military outpost established in 1718. The outpost was named after the Duke of Béjar, the father of the former viceroy of New Spain. Béjar is a town in Spain that was founded in 1208.
