Question: What South Texas town claims the title “Turkey Capital of the World”?
Answer: Cuero. In 1912, the town hosted its first Turkey Trot, drawing up to 30,000 spectators to see 18,000 turkeys strutting through town to the local processing plant. A celebration was organized around the annual event more than a dozen times until 1973, when the town hosted its first Turkeyfest. Organizers claimed the distinction of “Turkey Capital of the World” for Cuero, but the town of Worthington, Minnesota, objected. To settle the debate, a turkey from each town competed in the Great Gobbler Gallop, the first of which was won by Cuero’s entrant, Ruby Begonia. Worthington’s entrant, Paycheck, won this year’s race.
