Question: Where in Texas is the world’s largest bat colony?
Answer: Bracken Cave Preserve, in Comal County north of San Antonio. The preserve is home to the world’s largest colony of Mexican free-tailed bats, with more than 15 million bats, and nearly 20 million at peak summer population. Owned and managed by Bat Conservation International, the cave is a major maternity roost. On summer nights, the bats consume more than 100 tons of insects, including corn earworm moths and other crop pests.
