Question: Who is the only Texas governor to die in office?

Answer: Beauford Jester. Born in Corsicana in 1893, he served as a captain in the Army during World War I and studied law at the University of Texas. He was a member of UT’s Board of Regents from 1929 to 1935, and he was elected to the Texas Railroad Commission in 1942. He was elected the 36th governor of Texas in 1946 and was reelected in 1948. He died of a heart attack on July 11, 1949.
