Question: What Texas city is named after the former West Point commandant who is buried in Manhattan?

Answer: Fort Worth, which was named in honor of Gen. William Jenkins Worth. Born in Hudson, New York, in 1794, Worth served as a U.S. Army officer in the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War in Florida, and the Mexican War. He was the commandant of cadets at West Point from 1825 to 1828.

After the war with Mexico, he was appointed commander of the newly created Department of Texas, with headquarters in San Antonio. He died from cholera in 1849, and eight years later, his remains were reinterred beneath a 51-foot monument at the corner of Broadway and Fifth Avenue in New York City.
