Question: Where is the only Texas-shaped swimming pool listed on the National Register of Historic Places?
Answer: Plano. The aptly named Texas Pool was funded by oilman Herbert Hunt and opened in May 1961. According to local lore, the shape of the 168,000-gallon pool was traced in the dirt with a mesquite stick. Initially, it operated as the members-only Dallas North Swim Club. By 2007, the pool had fallen into disrepair, and a nonprofit organization was established to restore and operate the historic site. The Texas Pool was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
Other famous Texas-shaped pools include the Lone Star Lagoon at Hurricane Harbor San Antonio and the rooftop lazy river at the Marriott Marquis Houston.
