Question: What Texas county’s courthouse was once known as the “Bat Cave Courthouse”?

Answer: Presidio County. In 1880, the county seat was moved from Fort Leaton to Fort Davis, and a new courthouse was constructed. It was nicknamed the “Bat Cave Courthouse,” most likely a reference to the new jail—a dungeon beneath the sheriff’s office accessible by a trap door—or the the previous one, “a bat infested cellar under a house.” By 1883, the new courthouse was deemed unfit for use, and a new courthouse was built in nearby Marfa a few years later.
