Question: Where in Texas can you find a one-person cemetery in the median of a neighborhood street?
Answer: Hearne, about 50 miles east of Temple. The grave is the resting place of Hollie Tatnell, a woman born as a slave in 1859 and buried in the town’s colored cemetery in 1911. When real estate developers purchased the land in 1947, Tatnell’s family refused to exhume and rebury her body elsewhere, forcing the developers to construct a median around her grave. The site is marked by a large oak tree, two plaques, and a Texas Historical Commission marker installed in 2007.
