Question: What Texan was the first Mexican immigrant to receive the Medal of Honor?
Answer: Macario Garcia. Born in Castanos, Mexico, in 1920, he moved to Sugar Land with his family when he was three years old. After enlisting in the Army as a non-citizen in 1942, he participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, suffering injuries that removed him from action for several months.
On Nov. 27, 1944, despite being badly wounded, he single-handedly neutralized two German machine gun nests, killing six and capturing four others before being evacuated for medical treatment. President Truman awarded Garcia the Medal of Honor for his bravery the following year.
