Question: What early Texan was known as the “Belle of Buffalo Bayou”?
Answer: Mary Jane Harris Briscoe. Born in New York in 1819, she immigrated to Texas in the fall of 1836, where she met Sam Houston and other leaders of the new Republic. In 1837, she married Andrew J. Briscoe, one of the 59 signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Later in life, she helped establish the organization that would become known as the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
