Patrick Crusius, 26, the gunman who killed 23 people during a 2019 shooting at an El Paso Walmart, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to state charges of capital murder and aggravated assault.
On Aug. 3, 2019, Crusius drove nearly 700 miles from his home in Allen to El Paso. Minutes before the attack, he posted a manifesto in which he described himself as a white nationalist, motivated to kill Hispanics for immigrating to the United States.
District Attorney James Montoya, the fourth prosecutor to oversee the case, announced last month he would not seek the death penalty in an effort to provide closure to the victims’ families, who he claimed “want this case over and done with as soon as possible.”
Students from Sul Ross State University discovered a fossilized vertebra from an Alamosaurus in Big Bend National Park last month. The long-necked, whip-tailed sauropod is the largest known dinosaur to have lived in North America, measuring an estimated 70 feet in length.
The fossil is believed to be part of one of the region’s most complete Alamosaurus skeletons, which was first identified by University of Texas researchers in the 1970s. It was transferred to the paleontology laboratory at Sul Ross and is being studied alongside other vertebrae discovered in the area.
Previous fossil discoveries from Big Bend National Park include parts of a pterosaur—the largest known flying creature, with an estimated wingspan of 36 feet—and the skull of a horned Bravoceratops, a species only known from Big Bend.
Houston Company Hosting $10,000 Treasure Hunt
Houston’s U.S. Coins & Jewelry kicked off a community treasure hunt Sunday featuring $10,000 of cash and rare coins. Participants can follow the company’s Instagram page for clues about the secret locations, which will be revealed tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday.
The event coincides with National Coin Week and aims to promote the 40-year-old company’s upcoming relocation to a larger store. Last year, the business hosted a similar event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the weeklong celebration.
Each drop will include $250 cash and a coin worth up to $3,650. Coins yet to be claimed include a 1892 $10 Liberty Head Eagle, a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent, and a 1915-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle.
“Coin collecting is a timeless hobby—often called the ‘hobby of kings,'”co-owner Kenny Duncan Jr. said. “Our hope is that this treasure hunt sparks that same curiosity and wonder in kids, families, and longtime collectors alike.”
