Article Icon 1Abbott Vetoes THC Ban

Less than an hour before a midnight deadline on Sunday, Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed legislation that would have banned consumable hemp products containing the psychoactive compound THC, ending weeks of speculation about what he would do.

Abbott acknowledged that Senate Bill 3 was “well-intentioned,” but argued its implementation would face “valid constitutional challenges,” including a perceived conflict with federal law that allows the cultivation of hemp. He also suggested the measure could turn innocent Texans into lawbreakers.

Instead, Abbott called a special legislative session to address the issue, stating that “the problem THC poses for our communities is real.” He urged lawmakers to craft a solution that is “strict, fair, and legally sustainable,” suggesting THC-infused hemp products could be regulated like alcohol.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a chief proponent of Senate Bill 3, expressed disappointment with Abbott’s decision, saying the ban was backed by “families who have seen their loved ones’ lives destroyed by these very dangerous drugs.”

Article Icon 1Bernie Sanders Hosts Rally in Fort Worth

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders visited Fort Worth on Sunday night, addressing more than 6,000 supporters at Dickies Arena as part of his national “Fighting Oligarchy” tour.

The independent senator from Vermont, 83, delivered a fiery harangue about authoritarianism, income and wealth inequality, and the political influence of corporations and billionaires. He called the Trump administration’s Saturday bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities “illegal and unconstitutional,” prompting the crowd to chant “no new wars.”

We should be spending our money and manpower rebuilding America, not going to war against Iran,” Sanders said.

Sanders was joined by U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Austin) and former Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke. Casar called for increasing the minimum wage and raising taxes on billionaires, while O’Rourke urged Democrats to become more engaged in advocacy and voting.

Higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its 2026 World University Rankings report last week. The University of Texas at Austin earned the top spot among Texas colleges.

UT Austin was ranked No. 68 out of more than 1,500 universities worldwide, receiving high marks for graduates’ success in finding jobs and its communications and media program. Texas A&M ranked No. 144 and was recognized for its petroleum engineering program.

Rice University landed in the No. 119 spot, earning a high score for its low student-to-faculty ratio. The University of Houston ranked No. 556, Texas Tech ranked between No. 731 and No. 740, and Baylor ranked between No. 1,001 and No. 1,200.

The analysis determined the rankings by considering academic reputation, employability, learning experience, global engagement, and sustainability. See the full list here.
