Sunoco Acquiring Canadian Fuel Retailer
Dallas-based fuel distributor and pipeline operator Sunoco LP has agreed to acquire Canadian fuel retailer Parkland Corp. for $9.1 billion. Parkland is one of the largest owners of gas stations in Canada, with about 4,000 locations.
Sunoco’s offer represents a 25% premium over the seven-day average price of Parkland’s stock. Parkland has faced pressure from its largest shareholder to restructure.
The deal is expected to close in the second half of this year and will result in the formation of a new publicly traded entity, SUNCorp LLC. Last year, Sunoco acquired fuel storage and pipeline operator NuStar Energy for $7.3 billion.
Dallas Shopping Center Redevelopment Paused
The $200 million redevelopment of a Far North Dallas shopping center is on hold after the developer, the city, and residents opposed to the project have agreed to a jury trial on October 6.
Developer Henry S. Miller plans to convert the Pepper Square shopping center into a mixed-use project with up to 868 apartments—including at least one 12-story building—and 35,000 square feet of retail space. The city approved rezoning for the development last month.
Residents sued to stop the project last October, alleging the developer had not provided adequate notice of a rezoning proposal. Since then, they have accused the city of violating its comprehensive land use plan, arguing the development is an example of illegal “spot zoning.”
“Taller buildings with more and denser housing options are suited for Downtown Dallas, while shorter buildings with less focus on residential and more focus on community retail, restaurant, and personal service options are better suited for suburban areas,” reads the lawsuit.
Battleship Texas Offering “Normandy Tour”
The historic battleship USS Texas, which has been closed to the public since 2019 as it undergoes repairs, is welcoming small groups of visitors once a week for the next two months. It is being prepared to reopen next year after securing a location at Galveston’s Pier 15 as its new home.
The 2-hour guided Normandy Tour highlights the ship’s role in the D-Day invasion and showcases its half-deck, 45-caliber guns, and the captain’s cabin. Hard hats are required, as the ship is still being repaired.
During the June 6, 1944, invasion of Normandy, the battleship supported Allied troops scaling the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, firing 255 shells at the German defenses in just over half an hour. USS Texas is the last surviving battleship from D-Day.
“We’re the last battleship that can tell the story, and we want to make sure we get it right,” said a representative for the Battleship Texas Foundation during a recent media event. Tours cost $100 and are offered only on Sundays through the end of June.
