Article Icon 1High-Voltage Power Lines Raise Concerns

Plans to build three extra-high-voltage transmission lines from Central Texas to the Permian Basin have raised concerns among some landowners along the proposed routes. The 765-kilovolt lines would require a 200-foot right of way with 19-story towers every 1,000 feet.

The $33 billion project aims to provide power to the fast-growing region, where electricity demand is expected to swell to 26 gigawatts—about a third of ERCOT’s entire load during the peak of summer—by 2038.

AEP Texas and CPS Energy have proposed a 370-mile route between San Antonio and Fort Stockton, while the Lower Colorado River Authority and Oncor have proposed routes from Bell County to Schleicher County and from there to Ward County.

The utilities held multiple public forums for each of the proposed routes over the summer, but some residents have complained that they were not sufficiently advertised. If the Texas Public Utility Commission approves the transmission lines, they are expected to go into operation in 2030.

Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio are among the most accessible cities in the U.S. for people with limited mobility, according to a study by travel website Wander that examined walkability scores and the number of wheelchair-friendly attractions, trails, and public transit stations.

Houston edged Dallas for the No. 4 ranking, with an accessibility score of 9.45/10. It was recognized for having the most wheelchair-friendly trails, with nearly 63% of its 158 trails earning the designation.

Dallas earned an accessibility score of 9.40/10 for the No. 5 spot. San Antonio’s score of 8.91/10 tied with San Francisco for the No. 10 ranking.

Accessibility should never be an afterthought; it’s part of creating exceptional travel experiences,” said Wander Chief of Staff Matt Kowalewski.
